In recent years, Sucre has struggled to keep up with the water demands of its growing population, leading to water shortages in the dry season. But all that is about to change with the announcement of the creation of a new waterworks on Revalo River, 60 miles from the city. The plant, when fully operational in 2018, will double Sucre’s peak water supply from 400 to 800 liters per second.
Construction on the plant will begin in 2015. The project is budgeted at US $58 million (Bs 241 million) and is to be funded jointly by the Bolivian Government (40%), the Government of Chuquisaca (40%), the Mayor of Sucre (15%) and the local water company, Elapas (5%).
